Thriving, not surviving

The Huffington Post wrote an article exploring how national service programs help not only those being served, but also those who serve. It's a proven fact that being altruistic makes one healthier. Check out the article!

"National service organizations such as AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps have long been cost-effective ways to address national and international problems such as poverty, disparity in education and climate change. But now we are seeing that there is an additional benefit -- improving the lives of those who serve." - Huffington Post

Why do you love service?

We're beginning our new series of Narrating AmeriCorps, where we ask our Austin Alums just about anything we want. During the month of February, we focused on the question, "Why do you love service?"  We got a variety of answers and had some fun with Valentine's Day photo props at our monthly social event.

Meghan, (AmeriCorps National 2009-2010), and Brittany, (AmeriCorps Vista, 2011-2012) discuss what service means to them and to their communities.

Some of our Austin Alums recently helped out Austin Independent School district by volunteering at a The Austin Energy Regional Science Fair. Volunteers helped with registration, parking, judging and so much more.

"I enjoyed being able to connect with the students, and learning about why lemons produce more power than potatoes," said Tash, one of our local Austin alums. "It was important to be involved with the program because the group needed volunteers and I am interested in supporting educational equity, so I thought this was a good step."
