Why do you love service?

We're beginning our new series of Narrating AmeriCorps, where we ask our Austin Alums just about anything we want. During the month of February, we focused on the question, "Why do you love service?"  We got a variety of answers and had some fun with Valentine's Day photo props at our monthly social event.

Meghan, (AmeriCorps National 2009-2010), and Brittany, (AmeriCorps Vista, 2011-2012) discuss what service means to them and to their communities.

Okay, AmeriCorps Alums, perhaps you're feeling like you need a different career path?  Maybe one tied more closely to your past service? If so, remember it's never too late to find a job or career you are passionate about and there are variety of resources and schools that can set you on the right path.

Take Calla, for example. A former City Year AmeriCorps alum, she didn't know how to take her service to the next level, but knew she wanted a career in social justice. Now, she's a first-year student at Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management. Read all about her journey on the National AmeriCorps Alums' blog page.

During our time serving in AmeriCorps, we all faced many challenges that were unique and taught us how to be stronger individuals called to serve and make our world a better place. Whether it was serving in the Vista, State, NCCC, Public Allies or the other numerous national service programs, we're all in this together.

The stories we've experienced are many, but it's a story like this one that shows us how important national service is and how it can help others overcome obstacles.

Read how one woman’s abuse and homelessness become lessons in classroom as she served in Public Allies.
